If you still don’t know Stephon Mendoza let us help you to get familiar honey! Stephon and his friends are showing us what it means to be 5th Ave Fab every Tuesday on the new BET series “F in Fabulous.” Stephon may be a Baltimore native but he is taking New York by storm with his three equally glamorous gal pal’s Kamie, Savannah, and Eny Oh. Don’t get it twisted though, Mendoza is more than just good looks and a lavish lifestyle, he’s also a student at FIT studying fashion design as well. His eye for style and design has already caught the attention of Young Hollywood such as Zendaya Coleman and Lil mama!
We had a chance to talk with Stephon Mendoza about his new show, his dope fashion, and the future! Check it out below!
USTYLEMAG.COM: So you are most definitely putting the “F in Fabulous” every week! What were you most excited or anxious about the show airing on BET and how do you feel about it since seeing the show air?
Stephon: Before the show aired, I was really looking forward to people seeing my personality for what it is and for viewers to gain an understanding of who I actually am! I say that because people have a lot of preconceived notions about who I am based off of how I look, how I dress, and my photos on Instagram. Yes, I live to take a bomb photo, and truly I love to turn up and do the most like the rest of us but, I was also a little anxious about how I would be edited in post production but at the end of the day I’m doing this with my actual friends. We all understand and enjoy each other so the effortless relationship dynamic between the four of us is what is being shown on camera. Since “F in Fabulous” has aired, I literally love watching the show (not because I’m on it haha) but because it really has a certain something that I’ve been searching for in a television show!
USTYLEMAG.COM: Since coming to the city how has New York inspired your personal fashion style along with fashion design?
Stephon: Needless to say, New York has inspired me in so many ways. It has inspired a certain energy within myself and has allowed me to develop a certain thought process the truly enhanced my creative freedom. I think it can definitely be seen in my personal look but also my design style because when I’m designing I have “target customer” but that customer is also me.
USTYLEMAG.COM: We read you have two different fashion personalities! ‘Steph’ being more relaxed and ‘Mendoza’ being more flashy. If you had to choose one, which would it be?
Stephon: Yes, Steph and Mendoza are definitely on 2 different wavelengths! Steph is definitely your “chill” downtown dude that loves a SnapBack and sneakers (I know…you never would’ve thought) while Mendoza is your Muva who resides uptown and lives for the drama and the silhouette of a garment. I would probably choose Mendoza because that’s who stands out a little more and that’s the person who people notice the most. But really, you can’t have one without the other!
USTYLEMAG.COM: We’ve seen Zendaya rock some of your amazing designs, what celebs out there would you love to design something for right now?
Stephon: Zendaya literally was on my list of people for the longest time and it was only the universe that brought that to life! If I were to choose any other celebrities I would definitely say Lady Gaga, Grace Jones, Erykah Badu and of course, I’d love to see the Queen Bey in a Mendoza piece.
USTYLEMAG.COM: You are already making your mark while being f-in fabulous in the process, so what do you hope for people to see within your fashion designing and TV show within the next few years?
Stephon: I would love to kick of my signature hat collection in the near future. Millinery has always been a strong passion of mine. Something a lot of people don’t know is that most of the hats that I wear on the show are hats I’ve handmade myself. There have been so many people who have been asking me about them so it’s something that I’m definitely going to put my energy into. I’d love if everyone could being to be apart of the brand I want to build. As far as my TV show, I would definitely like to display the initial development of my hat collection and for people to truly see and understand the brand and product that I want to create. Additionally, I want viewers to see themselves in one of us in one way or another. I hope you can look at us and see your group of friends and the trials and tribulations that we all go through in our personal and professionals lives all while trying to balance fun, excitement, and friendship at the same time. I think we’re all incredibly relatable and I hope that is translated on screen. Something I want to continue to do with the show is to inspire people of all colors to start their businesses and live out their aspirations. So within the next few years, while my dreams play out on television I want them to inspire others young, old, black, white or polka dot to do the same.
